Stove Man, Pt. 2 on You TubeThe second video in our series created by Lansing Community College students shows another take on "Stove Man."
Habitat Lansing Stories covered by Local MediaCapital Gains, Lansing's online news magazine, covered the story of our first geothermal build in their June 17, 2009 issue. Read the story here.Local celebrity, Sam Singh, wrote an article published in the Lansing City Pulse on June 17. Sam traveled the world for 17 months and worked on Habitat Global Village sites in Costa Rica, Romania, and India. In his article, he mentions those experiences and his feelings about volunteering overseas. Check out Sam's story online.
Stove Man, Pt. 1 on YouTubeThe Lansing Community College chapter of the American Marketing Association spent 10 months coordinating a comprehensive ReStore marketing plan for us. They designed posters and postcards, created great messaging, and found a class that created three video PSAs. We will embed one video each week on our website. Here is the first:
Thank you, Titan Equipment![]()
Thanks to a generous donation from Titan Equipment, volunteers were able to build walls in panels, move them to our Vermont Ave. site, and put them into place quickly! Using a man lift, volunteers set the trusses and started the roof last week. Without these lifts, we would be slowly climbing ladders! Both our volunteers and staff members love using Titan Equipment for moving and building. This is the fourth project built using Titan products; to date, they have donated over $10,000 in gifts in kind through free rentals to Habitat Lansing. Thank you, Titan Equipment!
May 12 Dedication at Rybnikar Memorial Build
Two years ago, a fatal house fire took the lives of Habitat for Humanity Lansing volunteers Chuck and June Rybnikar. On May 12, 2009 at 5:30 p.m., a home built in their honor was dedicated at 6006 Pheasant in Lansing.
The home at 6006 Pheasant is special in many ways. First, the home is built on the Rybnikar homestead, which was donated to Habitat Lansing one year after the fire by Chuck and June’s heirs. The home is a custom-designed Cape Cod, which is very similar to the home that burned down. Read more about the home here. Interfaith/Intergeneration Project Continues Representatives of three faiths and three generations came together to build a home for the Williams family. On Wednesday, May 6, adults and children from Kehillat Israel Synagogue, the Islamic Center of East Lansing, and University Lutheran Church met at 4535 Pleasant Grove on Lansing’s South Side from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. Volunteers, both young and old, spent time digging up dandelions, planting lilies, and cleaning up the yard.
This is the second time the group has volunteered together; in late April, they worked on landscaping at 6006 Pheasant. Learn more about the project here. View photos from the last crew in our Photo Gallery. The volunteers have planned another crew this summer.
Women Build a Success! As part of the nationwide Women Build Week, which is leading up to Mother's Day on May 10, Habitat Lansing will hosted its first Women Build day in five years on May 2 at 4535 Pleasant Grove with Taniesha, the future homeowner. This build day was sponsored by Lowe's, who have granted Habitat Lansing $5,000. Fifteen women came together for the day to learn new skills, make new friends, and work on a home. Read more about Women Build Week here.
We had a great time doing demo on the old counter tops, removing a porch, and hanging drywall. Check out the Photo Gallery for pictures of our women builders. We are considering additional Women Build crews, so keep checking back to learn more and sign up through our Volunteer page. Women can always volunteer on our weekly crews, too!

We have posted a Pre-Qualifying Application on our Homeownership page. Filling out a Pre-App should only take a few minutes and will help our staff determine whether or not you meet our requirements for partnership. If it looks like you qualify, we will ask you to register as a volunteer and fill out a full application. We ask that you fill out a Pre-App and turn it in to our office by June 30, 2009. If you have questions, please contact [ Ashley ].

Thrivent Home Kicked Off April 16 with Ground Blessing We are thrilled to be partnering again with the Thrivent Builds program and eight local Lutheran churches to build a home in Lansing. Construction began on our fourth Thrivent Builds home, 1719 Vermont, last week. We celebrated with a Ground blessing ceremony on Thursday, April 16, at the site.
“Since this is our fourth house in partnership with Thrivent, we’re starting with a group of experienced volunteers,” said Denise Paquette, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity Lansing. “When you match those volunteers up with a motivated family, it makes for an exciting project.” The home will be built in partnership with Mohamed Abdi and his family, who are Somali refugees currently living in substandard housing. Abdi applied for a Habitat home last year as a way to support his mother and four sisters. When he told them about his acceptance into our homeownership program, "everybody was really excited and happy," said Abdi. After living in Somalia, then in a refugee camp in Kenya, now in a tiny townhouse, they will finally move into a home of their own this fall. Throughout the build, we will post photos of our volunteers and our progress in our Photo Gallery.
